Killing the brother: tyrannicide and self-deposition in Vittorio Alfieri

Can a tyrant abandon absolutism, becoming magnanimous enough to restore freedom? This is the question Alfieri poses. Conversely, if a corrupt people – accustomed to living under a tyrant – were to suddenly become free, they would struggle to maintain it. This is Machiavelli’s hypothetical answer. There are two possible solutions to tyranny proposed by Alfieri. In the first scenario, the tyrant is assassinated by a kinsman who seeks to free his people; in the second, the tyrant himself is a rare magnanimous king who decides to abdicate, restoring freedom to his realm. Alfieri explores the first scenario in Polinice, Timoleone, and Bruto Minore, and the second one in Agide, inspired by Plutarch’s Life of Agis and dedicated to the memory of Charles i, the King of England beheaded in 1649. These scenarios were already investigated by Machiavelli, Barclay, Dryden, and Southerne, during the Renaissance, the English Civil War, the Glorious Revolution, and the French Revolution and allow the examination of the relationship between Alfieri, Stuart England, and Revolutionary France.
